4 Things That Children Are Most Afraid Of
Divorce
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), separation
or divorce is such a big blow and loss to children, irrespective of their
age. "The scariest thing about divorce for kids under age 6 is the
unknown; it can be stressful, sad, and confusing," says Mona Gupta, D.O.,
a psychiatrist in Raleigh, NC. "It is not uncommon for children to think,
'What will happen to me if mom and dad do not live together?'"
while we may think that the far reaching scars of divorce only affect a
husband and a wife, children suffer the most.
Death/Losing a parent/ other family member
After
teaching the story of Joseph in a Sunday School class, I asked them what they
were most afraid of. Although the spelling of the word 'death' was a challenge
to the six year olds, a reasonable number stated that as one of their fears.
Ironically, in our African setup, parents or adults tend to shy away from
discussing this topic with their children. At funerals, often times you will
see people stand next to the widow or widower yet no one pays attention to the
children who at most times are distraught.
Not
having friends
Its
not a matter of peer pressure and it’s not just a grown-ups thing. Children too
have a void that can only be filled with friends. Children have a social
life which if not nurtured makes them live in fear due to the isolation.
Bad
dreams and nightmares
As I grew up, clothes hung at a corner took the
shape of a bad man intending to attack once my mother lay me to sleep. And the
fear was tangibly real. Children fear even the most silliest of things as per
grown up's judgement. And the fear is climaxed in their dreams and nightmares.
The rapidly evolving technology is not helping the situation.

The Prayer Mama Made Over Me
I have heard stories of mothers who pulled off their children's blankets, and poured some water on them every morning because they needed to wake up way before school time to pray. Others could not have dinner before they read the bible and prayed together as a family. Some mothers were known for their fervent prayers that woke every one up in the middle of the night. I will not even start on the grand mothers and aunties who whenever charged to pray, you better look for a seat because its gonna be a long one...and all the people in the family lineage will be mentioned in the prayer!
My favorite was one mother, who would wake up in the middle of the night to pray for her children. On this particular day, my friend, lets call him KM, was still in the sitting room with his cousins watching movies...And after that slow prayer song, and a little speaking in tongues, the mother went ahead and begun to tap the heavens. Her voice went above the roof and they had no option but to listen and in the dead of night, in the chilling quietness, her voice rang through:
" Lord please keep KM from contacting HIV-AIDS"
It was no doubt. Everyone had heard that! All his cousins. What did mama think of him? What did his cousins now think of him?
As much as it got to him, especially being the rebellious teenager that he was, he looks back today and is grateful that mama prayed. Km and his cousins always get so cracked up whenever they reminisce this day, this prayer.
There are so many more of such stories that our mothers and aunties made and we would love to hear them, and to share them here on this blog.
We will be giving 4 copies of The Power of a Praying Woman- By Stormie Omartian to gift your mother this Mother's day. You can also buy her a copy of this book to celebrate her!
Lets celebrate our mothers! Happy Mothers' Day eve

Keeping a prayer journal
I personally love writing. I think I gave up talking much because as you well know, distortion is almost inevitable.
But anyway, the faintest pen, they say, has the longest memory.
I feel good reading through my old books, those notes we would exchange in campus and high school. Sometimes it feels like deja'vu. I am able to recount the moment, I can almost get to the feeling then. That's how powerful the pen is.
Beyond this, I look back and see just how much I have grown, at least I can tell how far away I was.
This book will introduce your child to the discipline of keeping a prayer journal so that as God watches over his word to perform it, so will your child also watch over their written word to see it performed! It's a cool way to look at it...yea?
Here is a wonderful excerpt from a prayer journal as recorded in The Power of a Praying Kid:
When my friend's grandpa got sick, I prayed that he would get well. But he didn't, he died. That doesn't mean that God never answered my prayers. It means that God wanted him to come to heaven to be with him. So in my prayer journal, I wrote, "John's grandpa went home to be with Jesus. I guess he thought his time on earth was done. But everyone at the funeral felt God's love and peace. I think that's how God answered my prayers.
I'm sure you want your child or even yourself to look back to the things you trusted God about. You want to see the record of the ones He answered, you want to be reminded how He answered then and this will surely improve your relationship with Him.
They say journals get caught. But when it is your beautiful conversation with the Lord, who cares?
Get your child, your niece, your neighbor, your nephew a copy of THE POWER OF A PRAYING KID today and let them learn how to keep a prayer journal.

God Gave Me a Baby Sister

One of the reasons I think The power of a Praying Kid is very cool is because it has testimonies of children who made prayers to the Lord and He answered them.
You see, when Jesus told the disciples that "...unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven," it was in reference to their wholesome faith. The childlike faith!
I read some of them and I think to myself, " oh boy, I wish I could pray in such faith" What I am saying is that, as a parent, even as you help your child in reading this book, your faith will be challenged, your prayer life too. And I pray then even so, the challenge will come from the faith your child will exhibit in Jesus.

See this answered prayer!
when I was five, I asked God if he could give me a baby sister, and God answered my prayer. It took some time but I got a beautiful baby sister even though the doctors said it was not possible.

Here is another one:
One time when I was sick, I asked god to heal me. He didn't heal me right away, but he did answer my Prayer. Even though I wanted it to be answered sooner, He answered it when he wanted to.

NEW RELEASE: The Future of Banking in Kenya
Over the last decade, the banking environment in Kenya has experienced changes that have laid the foundation for a revolution in the financial services industry locally, regionally and globally.
In 2005, Equity bank pioneered a paradigm shift in the Kenyan banking industry by introducing a model that focused on the unbanked population- a population considered "unbankable" because of their "bottom- of- the - pyramid" socioeconomic status. This marked the first milestone of the decade- a shift of focus from financial exclusion to financial inclusion.
There have been more milestones achieved in the banking sector and with the rapid change and embrace of technology, banking is becoming more and more dynamic and volatile.
This book, The Future of Banking in Kenya applies a "futures" approach to provide insight to industry leaders and professionals on likely changes in the banking industry both in Kenya and globally over the next 5 to 10 years.
There are also perspectives from industry experts i.e Chief information officers, Financial sector experts, Telecommunications experts, IT experts, and even bank customers on the future of the banking industry.
The author, Dr. Percy Opio, has over 10 years’ experience in the banking industry at management and senior management levels in the ICT department where he has provided information technology solutions and services to organizations ranging from start ups to large corporates.
